Brakes

Automotive Brakes are essential safety systems in vehicles, designed to slow down or stop a vehicle by creating friction.

Brakes explained

Automotive Brakes are critical components in any vehicle, responsible for ensuring safe and controlled stopping.

The system typically consists of brake pads, rotors, and calipers, working together to create friction and decelerate the vehicle. The brake pads press against the rotors, which are attached to each wheel, and this action is controlled by the calipers. These components are subject to wear and tear due to the intense heat and pressure they endure during braking.

At Gateway Auto - Service & Collision Center, our brake services include thorough inspections, maintenance, and replacements of these parts to ensure your vehicle's braking system functions effectively and safely.

When or why do you need it?

Brake Service or Replacement is necessary when you notice any signs of brake wear or degradation, such as squealing or grinding noises, longer stopping distances, or a spongy feeling in the brake pedal.

Regular brake checks are crucial for safety and should be part of your vehicle's routine maintenance.

At Gateway Auto - Service & Collision Center, we recommend having your brakes inspected regularly to identify any potential issues early. If we find worn-out pads, rotors, or malfunctioning calipers, we provide expert service and replacement to ensure your brakes are in top condition, offering you peace of mind and keeping you safe on the road.

Frequently asked questions

If it's a car, we'll fix it. If it's a question, we'll answer it.

How often do brake pads need to be replaced?

Brake pad replacement frequency depends on driving habits, vehicle type, and the type of brake pads used. It is best to have your brakes inspected by professionals during regular maintenance to stay up to date on the condition of your brake pads. Gateway Auto offers free digital inspections with any service so that you can stay informed and build a maintenance plan.

Do you offer rotor resurfacing?

No, we only offer replacement of your pads and rotors. Modern vehicles have rotors built to such tight tolerances for weight and fuel economy reasons that they are often below minimum thickness specification by the time brakes come due. Even those that are within specification are more susceptible to warpage from heat once material is removed in the resurfacing process. These reasons, combined with the relatively low cost difference between the parts cost of brand new rotors and labor of resurfacing worn rotors, makes replacement a much more viable option in most cases.

What is included in a brake inspection?

A brake inspection involves checking brake pads, rotors, calipers, brake lines, and other components for wear, damage, and proper functioning. Our expert technicians will do a thorough inspection and help recommend the best solution for your vehicle.

Can I drive my vehicle with worn brake pads?

Driving with worn brake pads is not recommended and can pose serious safety risks. Worn brake pads can significantly compromise your vehicle's braking performance, leading to longer braking distances, reduced stopping power, and potentially dangerous situations. Driving in this case risks further damage and the chance of an accident.

Can I top off my brake fluid instead of getting a flush?

Topping off brake fluid is a temporary solution. A flush is necessary to remove moisture and contaminants that accumulate over time.

Can I drive my vehicle without getting a brake fluid flush?

While it's possible to drive, old and moisture-contaminated brake fluid can lead to reduced braking effectiveness and compromised safety. A timely flush is advisable.
