There are many different types of hybrid vehicles available today. A parallel hybrid, in which it is powered by the engine, electric motor, and both sources working together. The best known and widely popular model of this type of hybrid would be the Toyota Prius.
There is the range extender hybrid, meaning that there is a conventional engine to produce power for a generator that recharges the batteries. With this hybrid style, the engine only creates energy for the electric motor, but it will not drive the car. The BMW i3 is one of the more widely known examples of a range extender hybrid.
The final being plug-in hybrids, these can be physically plugged into a wall to recharge the batteries including their regular charging capabilities while driving. This version can drive longer mileage on their electric motors alone.
For electric vehicles, these are true electric only, no conventional engine, battery powered vehicles. A model you may be familiar with would be the Tesla line-up.
