- Computer scan. We connect to your vehicle's computer and read the stored trouble codes. The codes point to a system. They are the starting point, not the answer.
- Testing to find the cause. The technician tests the actual components and verifies the related systems, so the recommendation is based on the root cause and not a guess.
- Review and approve. Your advisor explains the diagnosis, the repair, and the price. Gateway Auto does not start a repair without your authorization.

Computer Scan
We connect to your vehicle's computer to read diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs). These codes point us toward the problem area but aren't the complete answer - they're the starting point.
Real-World Testing
Codes tell us "oxygen sensor reading lean" or "misfire cylinder 3." We then test the actual components and systems to find the root cause. Sometimes an oxygen sensor code means you need an oxygen sensor. Other times it means you have a vacuum leak or fuel system issue.

Why is my check engine light on?
It can be almost anything from a loose gas cap to a failing catalytic converter. The most common causes we see are the gas cap, oxygen sensors, the catalytic converter, the mass airflow sensor, spark plugs or coils, an evaporative emissions leak, or a misfire. The code points at a system, not a part, which is why we diagnose rather than guess.
Why is my check engine light flashing?
A flashing light usually means an active misfire, and that is the one case where you should stop driving. Unburned fuel reaching the catalytic converter can destroy it in a short distance, which turns a spark plug job into a much larger repair. Call us rather than driving it in.
What does a steady yellow check engine light mean?
A steady light means the computer has stored a fault but the condition is not an emergency. The car is usually safe to drive to the shop. Check the gas cap first, seriously, then book a diagnostic before the fault has a chance to damage something downstream.
Can I just get the codes read for free somewhere?
A parts store scan gives you a code number. It does not tell you which component failed or why. A code like P0420 names the system, and the actual cause can be the converter, an oxygen sensor, an exhaust leak ahead of the sensor, or an engine problem feeding the converter. The diagnostic is the part that saves you money.
