What ADAS is and where the sensors are
ADAS stands for advanced driver assistance systems: the features that brake, steer or warn you on their own. They rely on sensors placed around the car:
- Front camera mounted behind the windshield near the mirror, used for lane keeping and traffic sign reading
- Front radar behind the grille or bumper cover, used for adaptive cruise and automatic braking
- Rear corner radar inside the rear bumper, used for blind spot and cross traffic alerts
- Parking sensors and surround cameras in the bumpers and mirrors
Each sensor has to point in a precise direction. A sensor that is off by a small amount still works, but it is looking at the wrong spot, which means a feature can react late, react to nothing, or switch itself off. Calibration resets that aim to the manufacturer's specification.
When calibration is usually needed
The manufacturer's repair procedures decide when calibration is required. On many vehicles, it is called for after:
- Windshield replacement on a car with a front camera
- Front or rear bumper repair or replacement
- Collision repair near any ADAS sensor
- Removing or replacing a grille or mirror with a sensor
- A wheel alignment or suspension repair
- A driver-assist warning light after any repair
We check the manufacturer's requirements for your specific vehicle as part of every collision repair, so calibration is not skipped when it is needed or added when it is not.
How ADAS calibration works
Calibration is part of the repair plan from the start, not an add-on at the end.
- Identify the sensors. We note which driver-assist features the vehicle has and where its sensors sit relative to the damage.
- Check requirements. The manufacturer's procedures for that model determine which sensors need calibration after the planned work.
- Repair. Body, glass or bumper work is completed with the sensors handled the way the manufacturer specifies.
- Calibrate. Sensors are calibrated at our shop, using targets in a controlled space, a drive on the road, or both, depending on what the manufacturer requires.
- Confirm. The systems are checked to confirm the calibration took before the car is returned.
Insurance and timing
When calibration is required by the manufacturer as part of a covered collision repair, it is normally part of the insurance claim, the same as any other required repair step. We document it with the rest of the repair and work with every insurance company.
Calibration adds time to a repair, and how much depends on the vehicle and the type of calibration it needs. Some cars need a road drive at steady speeds, which depends on traffic and weather. Your timeline accounts for it from the start, and Enterprise rentals are available on site.
Start with a free collision estimate, and we will tell you whether your repair will need calibration.
Body labor and paint are guaranteed against defects in workmanship for as long as you own the vehicle.

Questions & answers
Do I need ADAS calibration after a windshield replacement?
If your car has a camera mounted behind the windshield, the manufacturer usually requires calibration after the glass is replaced. The camera sees through the new glass, so its aim has to be reset.
What happens if ADAS is not calibrated?
The features may react late, react to things that are not there, or turn themselves off. Some cars show a warning light, but not all of them do, which is why calibration follows the manufacturer's requirements rather than waiting for a warning.
Is ADAS calibration covered by insurance?
When the manufacturer requires it as part of a covered collision repair, it is normally included in the claim. We document it with the rest of the repair.
How long does ADAS calibration take?
It depends on the vehicle and whether it needs a calibration with targets, a road drive, or both. It is built into your repair timeline from the start.
Does every car need calibration after a collision?
No. Only vehicles with driver-assist sensors in or near the repaired area, and only when the manufacturer's procedures call for it. We check that for every repair.
