What is behind a bumper cover
The painted part you see is a plastic cover. Behind it sits a steel or aluminum reinforcement bar, an energy absorber made of foam or plastic, and the brackets that hold everything to the body. On most newer cars, that space also holds parking sensors, a radar unit for adaptive cruise or automatic braking, and the wiring that connects them.
That is why a bumper that looks lightly scuffed can still hide real damage. A low-speed hit can crack a bracket, crush the absorber or knock a sensor out of position without leaving much on the paint. The only way to know is to take the cover off and look, which is why the cover comes off before the repair plan is final.
It also explains why two bumpers with similar-looking damage can end up with very different repair plans. The cover is only one piece of the system.
Signs a bumper needs replacing, not repairing
Most cover damage is repairable. These are the signs a technician will usually recommend replacement instead:
- The cover is torn or punctured through
- Mounting tabs or clips are broken off
- The cover is cracked in several places
- Damage sits on a sharp body line or edge
- The reinforcement bar behind it is bent
- The energy absorber is crushed or split
If none of these apply, repair is normally the faster and less expensive route. We will show you which category your bumper falls into before any work is scheduled.
How we repair a bumper
Every bumper repair follows the same sequence, whether it ends in a repaired cover or a new one.
- Free estimate. We look at the visible damage and write an initial estimate. No appointment needed.
- Remove the cover. Taking it off shows the reinforcement, brackets, absorber and sensors behind it. Anything the first estimate missed is documented and sent to your insurer before it is repaired.
- Repair or replace. Damaged plastic is reshaped and repaired, or a new cover is fitted, along with any damaged parts behind it.
- Paint and blend. The cover is primed and painted with a computer color match, then blended so it matches the panels beside it.
- Reinstall and check sensors. Parking sensors and radar are reconnected, and calibration is done at our shop when the manufacturer requires it.
- Final check. Fit, gaps and finish are reviewed before the car is returned with a complimentary exterior wash and interior clean.
Insurance, cost and timing
What a bumper repair costs depends on whether the cover can be saved, whether parts behind it are damaged, how complex the paint is, and whether sensors need to be recalibrated. Three-stage pearl and metallic finishes take more blending than solid colors. Every car is different, so the only accurate number comes from looking at yours, which is why the estimate is free.
If the repair goes through insurance, we work with every insurance company and handle the documentation with you. If the other driver was at fault, their insurance normally pays. If you are paying out of pocket, you get a written estimate before any work starts. Read more about the collision repair insurance process.
Timing depends on parts and paint. A cover repair is usually faster than a replacement that waits on parts. You get a timeline with the estimate, and Enterprise rentals are available on site. For a deeper look at the decision, see our guide to bumper repair vs. replacement.
Body labor and paint are guaranteed against defects in workmanship for as long as you own the vehicle.

Questions & answers
Can a cracked bumper be repaired?
Often, yes. Small cracks away from the mounting points can usually be repaired and refinished. Long cracks, multiple cracks, or cracks through a mounting tab normally mean the cover should be replaced.
Will the paint on my repaired bumper match?
We use a computer color match and blend the new paint into the panels beside the bumper, so the repair does not show a hard line. Older or previously repainted cars can take extra blending, and we will tell you what to expect before work starts.
Does a bumper with sensors need to be replaced?
Not necessarily. The cover can often be repaired with the sensors in place. Some sensors read through the bumper cover, so the repair follows the manufacturer procedure and the system is checked afterward, with calibration done at our shop when it is required.
How long does bumper repair take?
It depends on whether the cover is repaired or replaced, whether parts are needed, and how much paint work is involved. You get a timeline with your estimate, and we update you if anything changes.
Is bumper repair covered by insurance?
When the damage is part of a covered claim, yes, minus your deductible. If another driver caused the damage, their insurance normally pays. You can also pay out of pocket with a written estimate first.
Do I need an appointment for a bumper estimate?
No. Bumper estimates are free and walk-in at our La Vista collision center at 10939 Harrison St, or you can start with photos online.
